Trolls are awkwardly complicated things. They begin life as pint-sized troublemakers, all stone-throwing and toe-biting, before growing into big lumbering wallops with more brawn than brain. If they don’t fall into a ravine or get squashed by something heavier, they sometimes wobble their way into old age. Then, rather surprisingly, they spend their last century muttering clever thoughts and offering surprisingly helpful advice.
Hildur is one of those. You can read her years in the rings of the treestump headdress. Every wrinkle and every ring comes with a wise word, and she has plenty of both. When she isn’t snoring happily in a sunny glade, she’s the first to help smaller creatures with their muddles.
