    This is my own, personal, interpretation of the myth.

    I always had a weird feeling with this myth. Medusa did nothing wrong. Moreover, in some later versions, she is even punished for a crime she didn't commit. Yet she was doomed to a life as a monster, hunted down as a prized victory.

    And here comes the Hero, in full glorious and shining armor, with gifts and help bestowed by the gods themselves.

    Here comes the Hero, to rid the world of this foul monster.

    So, in this version, she welcomes this shining, righteous  hero as a relief from the cursed life she was forced to endure.

    The scene is that of relief, the end of her misery as she willingly closes her eyes and submits to a destiny more merciful than her life.

    She closes her eyes, to give the hero the chance to bestow the fatal, ending blow.
