The rumbling of the ground beneath the feet of an intrepid party of adventurers could spell the end for each and every one of them. One of any number of burrowing monstrosities could be responsible for the earth shaking. One of the worst to spring from the ground is the ferocious quaketail serpent. The quaketail serpent spends much of its time slowly burrowing through the ground, typically many hundreds of feet below, moving at a snail's pace to preserve energy until it senses heavy steps or rumbling above that is large enough for it to be worth the effort to burrow up and eat. Where a docile serpent would produce an ambient rumbling, an agitated serpent can burrow with speed unbecoming of its size, causing the sounds below foot turn from an ambient rumble to a cacophonous tremor.
