Kobzar of the Trenches
The Kobzar sits where others will not — amid broken helmets, spent shells, and a mound of skulls gathered from fields that no longer remember peace. His figure is wrapped in a long, weather-darkened coat, a gas mask hiding what remains of a human face. At his throat hangs an electronic vocabulatory device, its cables running into the body of an electrified kobza resting across his knees. He does not stand in formation. He does not advance with the line. He waits, and he plays.
The Kobzar’s music is not meant to inspire courage in the simple sense. His strings carry the weight of old Dumas, war-laments stretched across centuries and dragged into the trenches of the new age. The electronic hum distorts his voice, turning song into something half-prayer, half-machinery, as if the past itself is struggling to speak through wires and static. Those who hear him do not cheer — they remember. Home, blood, frost, hunger, faith. All the things that brought them here.
He plays during lulls in the bombardment, when the guns fall silent and the dead feel close enough to listen. Some swear the skulls beneath him resonate faintly with each note, as if the fallen recognize the melodies and lean closer. Others say the Kobzar does not play for the living at all, but for those already lost — to give them names, if only for a moment, before they are forgotten again.
In battle, his presence steadies the line without a word. Men reload in time with his rhythm. Hands stop shaking. Fear does not vanish, but it finds its place. The Kobzar does not command, does not bless, does not judge. He reminds the soldiers why they endure — not for glory, not for conquest, but because someone must remember what was, even as the world is torn apart.
When the firing resumes, the Kobzar’s song fades into a low electrical drone. He remains seated on his grim throne, fingers resting on the strings, waiting for the next silence to return.
“As long as the song remains, the dead are not yet gone.”
